Therapeutic play is more effective than ‘talking therapies’ for children

Play Therapy

How does it work?

  • It aids in physical, emotional and social development.
  • It fosters imagination and creativity.
  • It encourages confidence and concentration.
  • It helps children to make friends and learn about their world.
  • It allows them to learn from mistakes.
  • It helps in forming relationships.

Therapeutic play is more effective than ‘talking therapies’ for children who may not be able or want to talk about their problems/emotions.

Benefits

  • It is fun.
  • Gives children a sense of freedom.
  • There is a lot of flexibility for the child to choose how and what they want to do/need.
  • Helps children with social interaction and integration.
  • Physical activity.
  • Environmental cognitive stimulation.
  • Stimulates creativity and problem solving.
  • Emotional equilibrium.
  • Self-discovery.

  2. Therapy will thus start with an interim stage of 12 sessions, and if necessary, a longer intervention period will be discussed.

Effectiveness

It depends upon the severity of the problems:

  • For all children referred:  74% will show a positive change.
  • For those who are at risk:  76% will show a positive change.
  • For those who at considerable risk:  82% will show a positive change.
  • For those at extreme risk:  83% will show a positive change.

In other words,

‘Between 74% and 83% will show a positive change depending on the severity of the problems.’

Holistic approach

APAC (Academy of play and child psychotherapy) uses the Integrative Holistic model- this means we look at the whole child: emotionally, socially, and spiritually, instead of just focusing on the problems they have.

*APAC = Accredited organization, PTI/PTUK falls under this organization.

“A professional Play Therapy Organisation, recognised by the UK Government to issue a Certificate of Practice and ensure the quality of clinical work is acceptable. In APAC’s case, this is Play Therapy UK (PTUK) who manage the ‘Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists’, accredited by the Professional Standards Authority under the Accredited Register Programme.”
